Moist Oregon

Fall and winter are the rainy season's here in western Oregon.  The season creeks start flowing and the mushrooms start popping up everywhere.
This little creek flows down a hillside near our home.  We call the area the Fairyland.

I love the effect of long exposure and moving water.

Christmas Photo Booth

I've ordered a photo-realistic Christmas themed backdrop to use with my photo booth.  I'll have the booth setup at a couple of Christmas events in early December.  If you're looking for a fun addition to your special event or party the photo booth is a great idea.  Check my website for rates.

Roseburg Family Portraits

We had a great, although slightly chilly, time shooting family portraits on Sunday at the Roseburg Country Club.  Nice location for an extended family portrait session.

The holidays are a great time to update your family portrait.  Portraits also make great Christmas cards.  I offer very reasonable sitting fees and there is plenty of time to get your photos before Christmas.

Pick from 25 Christmas card styles.

A fungus among us

I found a tree stump covered with thousands of amazing little mushrooms today.

A colony of small mushrooms grow on a tree stump in a moist forest near Elkton, Ore., on Sunday, Nov. 21, 2010. Mushrooms and other fungi grow prolifically in the wet and rainy Pacific Northwest of the United States.
The little mushroom are probably deadly poisonous, but they sure are beautiful.

Nutria photo in The New York Times

The New York Times ran one of my nutria photos in the Fashion and Style section today.  It's a photo I took while I worked at The News-Review in Roseburg, Ore., and shared with The Associated Press.
The hat is the "after" photo.

The Week in Pictures

With about 35,000 votes in so far my picture of Scooter the cat leads the people's choice voting in the msnbc.com Week in Pictures photo gallery.  Every week editors at msnbc.com sift through tens of thousands of images from all over the word to put together the weekly feature.  Check out this behind the scenes video from ten years of The Week in Pictures.  I'm interviewed in the video...

Veterans Day Parade

Spectators watch as the Veterans Day Parade makes its way up S.E. Jackson Street in downtown Roseburg, Ore.  Veterans Day, also known as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world, falls on Nov. 11, the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I.
When I was a newspaper photographer I always tried to get in tight on faces at events like this. Today I stepped back for a wider perspective.
I shot the parade with my specialized perspective control lens. I love the effect, especially in photos taken from above.

By popular demand here is my best shot of the motorcycles from the parade.  They were very cool.

Fall colors

It stopped raining for a few hours today and I managed to find a couple of fall color pictures. Fall is my favorite season.  The colors just seem more intense.

Scooter the cat plays in the leaves.  Reprints of many of my animal and nature pictures are available.
Scooter's agent is going to kill me for posting this one.

Wet foot...happy photographer

Fall leaves, rushing waterfalls, and long exposures make for lovely photos on Deer Creek in Roseburg, Ore., on Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010.  My right boot sprang a leak, but I'm still a very happy photographer.
My photo agency, Zuma Press, is using one of my shots from this morning in their Pictures of the Day gallery.

Hunting heron

A great blue heron hunts at the top of a small waterfall on Deer Creek in Roseburg, Ore., on Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010. The great blue heron is the largest  heron species in North America.  They feed  mostly on fish, but are also know to prey on shrimp, crabs, insects, rodents, small mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and small birds.
I love the quality of the light on fall mornings.
